I just looked over the STEM library’s article on Building VEX IQ Robot Arms. This looks like an excellent resource to help both classroom teams and competition teams gather some ideas about how to assemble a robot arm

This coupled with the Arms Design video found in the Up and Over VEX IQ 2nd generation STEM Lab, these will give your students a great springboard to begin designing custom robot arms.
