My students are reading “What was the purpose of the Inca’s Strange Strings?” in ELA. This story is about the Inca civilization and the invention of a quipu (pronounced KWEE-poo). Quipus are strings tied to a thick cord that were used as a Math tool and an early written language. Utilizing beams and red pins, I had the students create their own Math problems representing place value like the Incas did!

I feel like this could become a fun game for students very easily too - and a great ‘end of VEX period’ transition activity too!
