VEX IQ Competition Team Roles

Trying a different approach this season and needing ways to include more students on our teams (up to eight per team). We have kicked off by setting personal goals, a team goal and also choosing three different roles on the team to ensure everyone is involved throughout the season. Students get to try everything so they can decide what skills they might like to develop and not everyone has the same role but if someone on the team is away, the team can still continue as they are cross-trained in all of the roles. Our students are rookies and loving it.

This is such a great idea, Michele! In the teams I’ve coached, so many students tried to box themselves into a role because they were reluctant to try the others out. The baseline of each student filling three roles, and trying everything, would have helped so much with that. Thank you for sharing!

I love love love this @Michele_Pikunic! It could be really neat to have students journal about their experience of each of their roles before, during, and after they’ve been in it. Like what do they think that role will be like, how did it feel to be in that role, and looking back, how did their experience in that role influence their learning and their team moving forward?

Definitely a fantastic way to kick off the year!

Thanks @Audra_Selkowitz for the great suggestion. It has been really helpful so far especially with having larger teams and ensuring everyone is involved, trying different roles and learning new skills.
